What to Expect: First-Time Visitors
Visiting a new space for the first time can bring up questions, and we want you to feel comfortable and at ease from the moment you arrive. Here is everything you need to know about joining us for a gathering.
What to Wear & Accessibility
-
Attire: Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. Simple, casual clothes that allow you to sit comfortably are ideal. Please wear clothing with subdued colors.
-
Seating Options: We offer traditional floor cushions (zafu), meditation benches, and chairs.
Threshold Etiquette: Removing Shoes
To keep our meditation area clean and to mark our transition into a place of practice, we leave our footwear at the front entrance.
-
At the Entrance: As you step inside, you will see shoe racks and benches right by the doorway. Please take a seat on the bench to remove your outdoor shoes before entering the main room.
-
Footwear Choices: You are welcome to use socks or slippers in the house and socks in the hondo (meditation room). We also keep slippers near the entrance for anyone who needs them.
What Happens During a Gathering
-
Arrival: Doors open 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. A sangha member will be at the doorway to welcome you, show you where to leave your coat and shoes, and help you find a seat.
-
Structure: Thursday gatherings open with a brief chant and guided shikan (silent, upright) meditation, followed by a short talk linking traditional Buddhist teachings to daily life, and end with time for Q&A over tea.
-
No Experience Required: Everything is guided. You will not be called on, tested, or expected to know any Buddhist terminology or rituals.
